Sancerre, Vouvray, Chinon, Saumur and Pouilly-Fume sound familiar? You are in the Loire Valley, Unesco World Heritage Site since 2000. The wines from the Loire Valley come in a vast array of styles, from dry to sweet, and from predominately white to sparkling. Key white-wine grape varieties of the region are Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Melon de Bourgogne. Loire reds, of increasingly high quality and importance, are mainly made of Gamay, Pinot Noir and of course Cabernet-Franc. Loire Valley is the ultimate good value wine region. Although it’s home of some superstar producers most of them didn’t yet get the fame they could deserve. Indeed, most of them are worth trying and Loire Valley wines can be absolutely stunning.
